Who is John Grace?
I am a seasoned attorney
I have practiced law since 1993. I spent the first 8 years in private practice in a general practice that included civil, family, and criminal cases.
I have represented the citizens of Lubbock for nearly two decades
In 2001, I went to work for Lubbock County Criminal District Attorney Bill Sowder. I handled civil litigation on behalf of the County in county, state and federal courts, and in the various courts of appeal. I also provided general counsel to the Commissioners Court and to various County departments.
In 2010, I moved to the City Attorney’s Office, where my practice continues to focus on civil litigation. I have represented the City on lawsuits filed in every court in Lubbock County and in appeals from the 7th Court of Appeals in Amarillo to the 5th Circuit in New Orleans and the United States Supreme Court.
I am a trusted colleague
Over the past 28 years, I have gained an excellent reputation in the community as an experienced, knowledgeable, impartial, and compassionate lawyer. Both my clients and opponents value and respect my legal abilities. In 2013, I received the highest possible rating (AV Preeminent) from Martindale Hubbell, based on a survey of Lubbock lawyers and judges. I am the only candidate in this election to receive this rating.
In 2016, I was honored by being elected President of the Lubbock Area Bar Association. On a statewide level, I have served as Chair of both the Texas Bar College and the Government Law Section of the State Bar. I continue to serve on the Council of the Government Law Section and I am a Fellow of the Texas Bar College and a member of the Litigation Section of the State Bar and the Bar Association of the Federal Fifth Circuit. My fellow lawyers have trusted me in leadership positions within our profession and have recognized my legal knowledge and abilities.
I am a legal scholar and educator
I speak frequently here in Lubbock and at seminars across the state. I have served on the faculty of several Texas Bar courses. I am a frequent speaker for many continuing legal education courses across the state, including the Texas District and County Attorneys Association Civil Law Seminar and the Advanced Government Law Seminar. In 2016, I was the Course Director for the Texas Bar College “Summer School” seminar. I've served as Co-Course Director for the Advanced Government Law seminar and the Government Law 101 “boot camp,” where I also presented a paper on Government Law Essentials. No other candidate in this race has my experience as a legal scholar and educator.
I am a life-long Republican and Conservative
On a more personal level, I am a life-long Republican. I cast my first vote for Ronald Reagan in 1981 and have consistently supported conservative candidates and causes ever since.
I am a Christian husband and father
Jill and I met while we were students at Trinity University in San Antonio. We were married 35 years ago in the university’s chapel. Our daughter, Chandler, graduated from Trinity University in 2016 and lives and works in San Antonio. Far from having an “empty nest”, Jill and I are “parents” to two cats, and two rambunctious puppies.
I am thanking you for your vote
